THE CRUSHING AND GRINDING PROCESS

Reducing the size of minerals by crushing or grinding is a fundamental stage in most mineral processing operations. Depending on the process, this operation may serve different purposes:

  • Reducing the particle size to suit the next stage of the process. For example, if a grinding mill can only accept material with a maximum size of 20 mm, a crusher must first be installed to reduce the feed material below this size, ensuring continuous and efficient feeding of the mill.
  • Producing the particle size distribution required for the final product. In many applications, particle size is a key specification of the finished product. A typical example is concrete production, where a controlled blend of different aggregate size fractions is required, such as:
    • Sand: 0–4 mm.
    • Fine gravel: 4–12 mm.
    • Gravel: 12–25 mm.

In this type of process, the stone crusher is usually installed in one of the final production stages. Its function is to reduce all the material to a size below 25 mm, preparing it for the final screening stage and the production of the required aggregate size fractions.

  • Maximum feed size of the material entering the crusher or mill.
  • Required product size after the crushing or grinding stage.

  • Physical properties of the material, such as hardness, abrasiveness, moisture content and other characteristics that determine equipment selection.
